Scarecrowby kstockHow to make a scarecrow
How do you make a scarecrow?? Some of us can’t even make our beds on a morning! Never fear, this handy guide will help you on your way, with ideas on different types of scarecrow and tips for decorating and jazzing it up.
1. Get all your materials ready before you start
2. Make sure you have all the tools you might need
3. Give yourself plenty of time, e.g. allow for paint and glue drying
4. Involve the family, or get together as a group, to make it more fun
5. Remember the scarecrow could be displayed in someone else’s garden, so be wary of making anything that requires staking into the ground!
6. If children are making the scarecrow, ensure they are closely supervised by an adult
What will I need?
- Stuffing. This could be straw, newspaper, plastic bags, old clothes
- Clothes. Pick the clothes your character will need. Or you could stuff a set of old clothes and then put a costume over the top. Basic clothes for a Mr Scarecrow: shirt, trousers, gloves. Basic clothes for a Mrs Scarecrow: shirt, tights or leggings, skirt, gloves. Check out charity shops for cheap costumes, or consider doing ‘child’ size scarecrows and using any existing fancy dress stuff you or your relatives may have.
- Pillowcase. This will be the head, once decorated.
- Paints or marker pens. To draw on the face.
- ‘Joining together’ stuff. E.g. safety pins, staples, string, florist wire or twine, glue.
- Coat hangers. If you want to pose your scarecrow, unbent coat hangers can be used in the arms and legs.
Basic Scarecrow
1. Tie the ends of the trousers/tights/leggings and shirt sleeves with string or in a knot and then stuff.
2. Tuck the shirt into the bottoms and secure with the staples or safety pins. Or if you are handy with a needle and thread, sew them together before you start the stuffing.
3. For the hands, stuff the gloves and attach them to the shirt with staples, pins, twine etc.
4. Get your pillowcase and draw/paint on the face. Make sure the open end of the case is at the bottom of the face! Once dry, stuff into a head shape. Tie the bottom end together and attach it to the top of the shirt with the staples, pins etc.
5. To make the head more stable you could put a piece of wood half inside the shirt and half inside the stuffed pillowcase.
6. Shoes/wellies/glass slippers can be placed at the bottom of the trousers/tights once the scarecrow is in position. If you seat him or her on a garden seat, this makes the job really easy. It also makes positioning the scarecrow much easier too as well.
